Some exporters like Cindigo for example have a checkbox in the rendersettings to do Clayrenderings.
By this the Exporter exports all materials as a diffuse or Oren Nayar material but preserves (alpha) blends, bump maps, displacement and emittance of the material.
Using this feature you can simply render a finished Scene Setup with hours of work done on materials, lightning etc. in clay mode without hassle :)

I see, I am working mostly in Maxingo. I am not sure its there or I have missed it.
