Objects invisible to camera but not to reflections

Post by delle » Tue Sep 16, 2008 1:48 am

Hi, I use Indigo to render interior scene but I have this problem:

1) If I eliminate the back wall (to place camera outside the room), I get a good shot but reflections are incorrect (e.g. black background) -> left Image

2) If I add the back wall, I have to place the camera inside the room, so I must create a longer room and I have to enlarge the viewing angle of the camera, in this case I have to create a "fake" room and I get a "non real" view. -> Right Image

Is it possible to add an attribute to objects, such as, invisible_to_camera to create objects that are not visible to the camera (e.g. Wall and furnitures near those walls) but visible to reflections and lighting calculations?

Thanks

You have to see it like this:
removing the back wall and putting the camera a bit more outside on one hand means, you can stay with the real room but on the other hand also means unrealistic cam position ;)

No, it's impossible, currently... And for some reason I doubt, Indigo'll be able to do it in the closer future...

What's the problem with the back wall? Can't the room just be a tad longer? Is it measured data, you're using?

Yes, I'm exporting data from my CAD program: "Easy Architect 3D" .

So exported data are real rooms with real furnitures.

I see... Well, then, for now you either have to live with black reflections or you use a different camera angle...

Or you use the fake room or you work with either a lightsource or a huge mirror ^^

Actually, there already was such a request, not so long ago... I think...

Just wondering: How long did you render those two, btw? They look like rendered for a few secs or so...

Ten minutes each on a Pentium 4 (4 years old)

Hi,

your request looks like a camera clipping.

Already post in the forum :

I'm very interested in this feature too !

My request is more than a camera clipping.

With a clipping some objects may reflect "cutted".

With my proposition you can choose which objects display.

In Povray this features is known as "no_image" (see here: http://www.povray.org/documentation/view/3.6.1/328/)

Sorry I was wrong.

I think that, even if the "no_image" feature is more powerful, the "camera clipping" approach can be useful too (for this specific problem).

Nice one again delle.

What could work for both shots would be to activate backface culling on a specific mesh, here the wall(s).

An option like <force_backfaces_hidden> or whatever suiting name would be trivial to implement I believe, but that's just me ;)

Hi, I've finally implemented the feature "<invisible_to_camera>true</invisible_to_camera>" present in Indigo 3.6.22 in My Application.

I was waiting since 2008....

This is the first Test

The image "No walls and ceiling" has only two walls and one floor (not using "invisible_to_camera")

The image "All walls present" has all walls present but two walls and the ceiling have the option "invisible_to_camera" active

Thank you Ono

You could use Section Planes for this too, they are in Indigo since 3.4.3.
Invisible to camera is also in since some time (3.6.22)
