Controlling Material ID colour??

Post by tar_gniK » Thu Apr 21, 2016 12:01 am

Long time no post.

At the moment I am using Indigo to generate images using Material ID in a Pop Art style (a bit unconventional to normal images).

Example below.

Most of the time, the Material ID generates a good set of colours, but where there is a clash, I then manually change this in GIMP. What would be ideal is if there was a way to control the colours that Indigo assigns to the materials when rendering in Material ID. At the moment, it is often random, and changes with a change to the material inside Max.

But is there a way of controlling the MatID colours in Indigo?

(Indigo 3.6.26, Maxigo, 3dsMax 2012)

nice stuff rat king!

Sadly atm there is no such way to control the MatID color.
Back in 2013 Ono said he'll look into it "in a bit", seems it felt of the table:

Thanks Zom-B.

Taking a look at that link, I actually agree with all the things you mentioned about MatID. At large resolution that I am using like 4960x7016 (A2), it does take time to clear sufficiently. But the colour thing would be quite handy.

Hopefully Glare can look into these ideas at some point.

If you use PS, there is an awesome filter helping here already with very low threshold settings and radius: Surface Blur

Its the MatIDs best friend

I love that way of hacking tools ! Contours are in post aren't they ? I'm wondering how they remain consistant with overlapping leaves. Well I'm tricked :D

Yes CTZn, the contours (lines) were added after. Admittedly, I had to use a well known "Toon" effect and shadow pass from another renderer and blend them in. It was easier to achieve those effects elsewhere, while Indigo was easier for the MatID. Basically using the easiest straightforward methods to get the job done. :)
