Observation room

Post by neo0. » Thu Jul 30, 2009 5:19 pm

I really like how the lighting is turning out, but im not so happy with the sparseness. Obviously, it's an observation room, not a living room, so there shouldn't be quite as much clutter, but it still feels a bit a empty..

Please, note that this is just the beginning.. After an hour or so of work.. It's supposed to be a room from a huge spaceship overlooking earth, as it departs.

Any ideas for things I could add would be appreciated. I intentionally had only one figure in the room. This was to create a feeling of loneliness or isolation.

Detail...and lots of it. If your room is going to be rather empty and huge then you should definitely work on giving it a lot of detail.

Is there even a glass mesh? I can't see the line from the increase in IOR. Also that last pillar on the right continues outside of the ship and just ends there...looks bad.

Also the uniform color, should go, though you did mention it was only an hour of work right?

The pylon on the right is supposed to be some sort of protective shield...

Nope, there isn't a glass mesh. I figured that there would be no point, since what im currently doing is just cutting out the window region in photoshop and adding the background..

If there is no glass....then there isnt anything keeping the air from escaping the ship. Tbh I think thats a major flaw... If I were you I'd add the glass mesh, use that alpha render option and use it to mask out the window area this would then allow your current background to "shine" through

Update! Renderered using the latest indigo. I tried to go back to the old indigo but the new one was over twice as fast. :)

EDIT : Added a fake window with a photoshop filter

New background... Does anyone have any ideas for how to populate the room?

watch bsg / stargate / andromeda / ... and check what their bridge looks like, or even the Halo ships.

oh and, photoshop the background in a little better  wasnt there an alpha render button in your exporter? that might help.

Magic wand tool isnt really awesome either tbh...Polygon select ftw :P no but seriously for "perfect" results i think the alpha render would be the way to do you could however do that ffor your final render and use polygon select/wand for now.

I haven't found any decent tutorials on how to use masks.. They all tell you what a mask is (already knew) but none of them tell you how to apply them..

At the moment, im trying the emitting plane..

Quick & Dirty:

Simply generate a new layer in your PS Chanel tab (automaticaly it gets called "alpha 1")
Paste your rendered Indigo Black-white mask here and then click on it holding CTRL to do a selection.
Use this to cut out your Indigo base rendering...

You can also use this selection to create a mask. Creat a mask select it in the layer (the preview box) and paste some black color into the selection... done...

Having PS without the knowledge of the BASIC work-flow is like owning a Ferrari without a driver license... get some serious training done until your Demo expires...
