Physical lens model

Post by majordack » Fri Jun 12, 2009 5:36 pm

so i thought i would try once again to model a camera lens model i searched up fisheye lens diagram
so i modeled it and thats the third photo and here is a render from it

my questions
1) what IS the lens considered to be?
2) this isn't supposed to be the view into a fisheye right?

I've never seen a fisheye look like that technical drawing - it looks more like a telephoto or zoom lens to me.

i never said it was.. i know what a fisheye lens setup looks like... but this might have been an early design of what might have been close to fisheye... but i guess its just a teledistorsion lens...

I think you make one major error in reasoning:

When looking through a fisheye-lens with your eyes you won't see the effect you await.
Also when looking through a tele-lens you don't see a tele effect.

The lens you build is a lens for a camera... so the effect is only visible an a projection-plane.

If you want to use this lens you got to build a camera body and where the sensor/film whould be you make a white plane... then render this plane and you got your fisheye-effect.

I did a big analysis of a modelled fish eye some years ago. I found that I could get a nicely distorted image looking straight into the lens. With the projection method, I could never get much better than a blurry image, it was near impossible to precisely locate the focal plane.
