Argh, I was wrong about image post-processings. I've contacted the original author who clarified some bits:

1. He made no post-processing to the photograph at all.
2. Materials are gold and steel. Steel made light reflections brighter on edges and gave less diffused light over the top surface.
3. In the back is not a fabric of some sort, but an LCD display. This explains soft shadows and consumption of much of the light: light is diffused in LCD layers. I've added another plain mesh under the original, and made top one a diffuse_transmitter. And -- magic! -- everything now is like on the photo. (Well, scratches are still unsolved.)
4. Actually medallion is 3cm tall. Well, that's not an order of magnitude from my model, so I left model dimensions as is.

Well, scratches are still unsolved.
Too bad

Okay thats £2 now: if the letters are rgb 0 0 0 in bump, try not to make the scratches less than 0.95 0.95 0.95, and report, I'm opening a paypal account (j/k)

yes, it's nice, but anyway, an exponent map can make it more realistic
