Prions =:0

Post by Macrob » Wed Jul 16, 2008 5:43 am

Hi all! Here is my next molecule of the month (May 2008). This time a functional prion ;)

I post this as a WIP, because I would like to use a more interesting background, but all I can imagine would be too much (ok, some might say it is already too much  )

And I finally I figured out how to cite

Data from here:
http://www.rcsb.org/pdb/static.do?p=edu ... 101_3.html

PDB ID: 2RNM
Wasmer, C., Lange, A., Van Melckebeke, H., Siemer, A.B., Riek, R., Meier, B.H. (2008) Amyloid fibrils of the HET-s(218-289) prion form a beta solenoid with a triangular hydrophobic core Science 319: 1523-1526

It would be much more visually interesting with some color :)

Yes; color the atoms... ;)

...but don't overdo it (especially don't oversaturate) : It needs to be artistically - not scientifically - pleasant :)

At the first glance it seems to have a face in the middle xD

One idea for adding a background:
With increased shadow in the distance, add instances around the original molecule :) - the others should be quite dark so that it doesn't get overly confusing.

PureSpider and zsouthboy:
Pretty funny
I thought about coloring specific structures, but if I want to keep some scientific "truth" it simply would not look good and it would be much too much work. It is one mesh and I would have to assign the material manually to every atom (I guess you guessed that).
I like it that way, kind of a snowflake

Kram1032: Interesting idea, but my RAM only takes one of these

I mean instances... they shouldn't really increase the use of RAM...

Try this with correct scales to get correctness of the DoF effect :P xD

It wouldn't be too hard to do some sort of random material assigning during the PDB import (I've used the script you're probably using for this. yay proteins!)

 Cool! A script. I will try this ASAP. I still convert the pdbs to obj

EDIT: Hmm, I found 2 scripts, but both don't work.
With my "secret" method, I con use different visualisation modes too, for example Cartoon. Here the coloring would be easier ;)
