Humster Car Render Challenge 2015 - Agera at Nürburgring WIP

Post by Oscar J » Sat Sep 26, 2015 10:32 am

Just as Koenigsegg was getting ready, new speed limit regulations at Nürburgring made it impossible for them to set a new speed record around the track.

Nothing is impossible in the world of 3D rendering though. My contribution to Hamsters Car Render Challenge 2015 will be an Agera R testing its lateral G-force limits around Caracciola Karussell, at the heart of "The Green Hell".

Just started making a rough mesh of the track, slapped a few textures on there as well. Good to see Indigo handling and loading those 12k asphalt textures like it's nothing. :)

Everybody, please feel free to comment and crit this WIP as much as you like, hopefully with your help this might turn out just great.

But oh no! There's a tree in the middle of the track!

Humster Car Render Challenge 2015 - Agera at Nürburgring WIP

Very cool project!!!
If you have the chance and Time, visit the nordschleife by yourself and take photo references. It's a nice trip for the weekend! Because not only the signs and track graffitti differs a lot from all photos and game level photos; the whole foliage is extremely important for this location.
If you model everything in highres quality, with very highres textures, think about selling the location!!!
I am very excited of this result!!

Do you know the free racing Sim rfactor? You could extract things there for references, too.

Track for rfactor:

3DSimEd for model and texture extraction:

Hi

I know the curve Karussell it belonged to the old route of 25Km. and was the scene of wonderful challenges between Porsche 908 and 917 Ford GT40 Ferrari 512 years in 1970. I think it was the inside of concrete to facilitate the grip.
Once the track will serve well modeled trees and car ......

Thanks a lot for your comments! Will make sure to visit Nürburg one day, but am unlikely to have the opportunity before the competition ends. :(

I'll have a look at the 3D data. While I'll try my best to make the piece of track fairly accurate, there's stuff like composition, materials, textures, integration of the car, driver, animating the car and camera for motion blur, etc. So I can't promise millimetre precision. :)

Don't mind!
Hauptsach geil musses sein! :D
But I think you'll rock this baby!
Concerning the foliage:
I can recommend these ones... Although some textures could be more highres. But you get a great realism and variance with them. Not really for the closeup, but for everything else.

Saved that site as a bookmark, but with my student economics in mind I'll try to do this using free/own models as much as possible. :)

I get like 30k s/sec with all the trees, what do you guys recommend to speed up rendering with lots of instances? My leaves are now blended phong/DT, am afraid double side thin would be even slower...?

Funny thing: This is the first scene I've rendered that gets the highest samples/s using BiDir MLT. :)

Hi

I remind you that even in Monza there is a path with parabolic curves used until the 70s for the competitions of the Sports Prototype; not to forget Indy.
Today has been restored and used for testing and vintage cars..

I'm sure it will be quite a job!

Hi Oscar.
The speed is very low due to the amount of geometry (I believe). If you test a double sided thin for the leaves the speed decrease even more, yes (a half more or less).
Good luck for this adventure man !!

I suppose you are using an alpha map for the leafs? Indigo will render faster if you don't. That means just plain geometry leafs.
Not sure if you are able to do so with your 3D foliage...
Thats the reason why I like the new forester plugin for C4D.

Thanks guys, nick looked into the speed issue, it was most likely some scattering bug in blender:

"I think I have found why it is so slow.
It looks like there is a problem with the scattering (of the trees presumably)

There are lots of tree instances in *exactly* the same place.
This means that rays have to trace against all of them.

nick"

Now: bring out the blue carbon! :D

(please excuse any UV wrapping issues)

Got the scattering sorted out - now it's just the matter of adding a few more variants of trees.

Quick render: :)

Variance in color of the leafs maybe?
No problem:

:D

And don't forget to mix some fir trees in there... :)

I am so excited...

That looks friggin complicated. Wouldn't it be easier to just have, say, 5 different textures for the leafs instead?

But it's nice that I can get a pro like you all excited. :)

If fused would integrate ISL completely with sliders and input fields, with all possibilities you have in Indigo GUI, into the C4D cindigo Material GUI, it would be VERY easy.
If you like I can provide you an C4C example scene... It's no rocket science, but unhandy.
