Correct!
I am not aware of an inexpensive Mac program that allows you to convert .hdr into .exr but the Windows software Picturenaut has helped me in the past. I have a copy of Windows Vista running in VM-Ware Fusion for the occasion that I cannot find an equivalent mac software and to run my 3D CAD software.
Well let me make you aware of one that's working for me; Luminance HDR for mac. :) http://qtpfsgui.sourceforge.net/?page_id=2 Can import and export .exr, and you can make your own HDRI's as well.

Here's a new render, still only Indigo sun. Modeled some real headlights, and the underside. C&C are welcome!

I figured out how to use both sun and HDRI - by increasing the gain of the HDRI to 1 x 10 ^7. The HDRI needs a lot of gain to show up in the reflections.

So here's a new render, C&C are welcome.

Looking good!

Just a quick note.

You can open .hdr files with the OS X Preview and export them to OpenEXR. No additional software needed.

I know this, but the EXR's got very washed out.

I modelled rims and brakes. It really is looking good already IMO. Now I'll have to figure out a way to put a shadow under the car when rendering with a HDR. C&C are welcome as usual!

Here is a more serious rendering try. Any C&C would be appreciated. :)

What's the IOR on the car material? Looks a bit high.

Ya think? It's 1.4. Not sure whether that's too high or too low. :?

Improved the render, with slightly less IOR and improved wheel materials.

Made me want to share this material, it's a simple enough base to get a whole lot of variations (Fire & Ice and such).

I played around with that paint CTZn gave me (thanks) and came up with some interesting results.
