[request] 'background color' intensity slider

Post by kwistenbiebel » Wed May 21, 2008 8:49 am

Hi all,

I am in no position to ask for features to be added. Skindigo is great as it is.
But I feel this is an important one.

When rendering with 'background color' environment light (=skydome), any other light added to the scene won't render.
I presume this is because the environment light intensity is really really high.
Even setting the light intensity of your emitter materials in the millions won't bring them within visual range.

That's why I would like to request an intensity slider for 'background color' skydome light.

Would this be possible?

Regards,
Kwistenbiebel

hey Kwistenbiebel,

it seems to me that the intensity is just set way too high. i'm not sure what reason Whaat has to set it as such, maybe he can offer some input on that. i've found the power to be about 10,000 times too great and after reducing it as such, renders work out much easier -- even camera tonemapping. he has instituted a multiplier of 200,000 and like i said, once reduced to only 20 it seems to work out a little better ... but there must be a reason it is set at 200,000 to begin with.

Whaat? :D :?:

Thanks for the reply...
Is there a way I can lower the background color intensity manually?
(in the "default-settings.igs" file ?).

hey Kwistenbiebel, yeah you can manually lower the intensity, it can be found in the settings file right after the camera entry:

Code: Select all

		<background>
			<spectrum>
				<rgb>
					<rgb>5100 5100 5100</rgb>
					<gamma>2.2</gamma>
				</rgb>
			</spectrum>
		</background>
i'd suggest reducing your rgb values by a factor of about 10,000. in the example above the numbers were initially 51,000,000 which (unless youre using reinhard) results in a pure white screen! :D

hope this helps :)

Hi guys,

@kwistenbiebel,

What are the RGB values that you are using for your desired Background Color? (values shown in SU 'Styles' window?)

I might have to revisit the calibration of the background color intensity. I remember calibrating it at one point but it looks like further testing is required.

For now, you'll have to edit the settings manually in the IGS file until you get the right balance.

Whaat

btw,
in next version (next major version at least),
I think I will introduce a luminance setting for the background, which should help with these problems.

Cool.

Thanks for the work around, Cpfresh.

i never really used the background color environment before, but after messing with it ive decided it is pretty cool! after tweaking the background intensity as well as the light intensity i came up with the image down below. could result in a very nice mood.

cant wait for your luminance addition, Ono! and your power intensity recalibration, Whaat!

Whaat
The RGB of the background I had set was : 189, 209, 208.
It's a blueish tint, the same as the default SU sky color.

And thank you Whaat for recalibrating the values.

Also to Ono Sendai: the luminance feauture will be cool. Thanks for that.
While you are here: multilight? Sun/sky separation ? Sky+HDRI etc...? ;)
