Is it possible questions--

Post by crc » Thu Apr 05, 2007 5:33 am

with sketchup and Indigo is it possible to create something along the lines of this-
http://www2.indigorenderer.com/joomla/i ... emId=15493
mostly I'm talking about the quality of the texture, the metal, the sheen, etc.
also, is it possible to create the glass spheres/etc. that are modeled so often and seen through out the gallery.
I'm doing a bathroom right now with brushed stainless fixtures and white glass light sconces above the mirror.
The fixtures are coming out almost white, and the glass sconces are either opaque and ceramic looking, or completely clear, with black shadow artifacts on the edges. I know that it is mostly playing around with the settings, but any help is greatly appreciated.

this was a more or less simple bumpmap on a specular ;)
I thing, the bump has to be quite hi-detailed...

yes....
ok...
the problem is, that I just used my first indigo internal texture a day ago^^
And it was in blender and not in sketchup, which I don't even have...

The spheres mostly are primitives.
Don't know, if the Sketchup-Exporter can Export them...
In Blender, ou just have to call the mesh "____.sphere" and it will get exportet...

Black artefacts either mean normal or normal-smoothin problems ;)

If there are such artefacts, although the normals are ok, you have to makre the shape rounder ;)

Just did this test, and I think I found the issue with the black artifacts.
In sketchup, when you apply a translucent material, it is a single plane, and that is what I have been doing. but as a test, I made this glass, double sided, and much much better results.
this is one hour of rendering. :D

Somewhat funny:
Noone expects, that physical correctness needs 3Dmaterials...
I my self used doublesided stuff from beginning ;)
singlesided stuff wont work...
as you found out yourself ;)

You can try using a Phong material with a high Specular value (try 0.6) and a low Exponent value (try 50).
You could also try the above values in combination with a brushed metal bump map.
Another idea is to use Complex IOR Chrome or Aluminum with a low exponent value.

You can create spheres within Sketchup but you should make them as smooth as possible so you don't see black artifacts around the edges. The Indigo Sphere primitive is not supported with the exporter.

Thanks Whaat, I'll try those values for the metal.

On the sphere topic, I wasn't really worried about creating an actual sphere, just trying to get glass/translucency along those lines. I think I'm getting there with my glass above, but still having problems with the sconces. working on it though, I think I'm heading down the right path.

@Whaat:
You do the exporter, right?

It would be cool, if you could impent those things.
I don't use Sketchup none the less, but sometimes, it's VERY useful in Blender ;)

Can you do it namebased, or so? (As in blender)

I will try to implement Indigo primitives in a future release. I would likely do it namebased. However, right now, it is at the low end of my priority list unless I get a bunch of requests for it.

there are actually the shape components in sketchup. I just remembered those, they could be used as primitives. not necessarily by the plug-in, more important things then implementing that.
