Carrara Exporter

Post by xrok1 » Tue Jun 19, 2007 7:33 am

if anyone is capable of making a Carrara exporter that would be great. Carrara is capable of reading files from all my other apps including CAD so I (and others) could model different components in Sketchup; Hex; and Solidworks then do assembly of scene in Carrara & Render with Indigo. The perfect workflow.

Any takers?

I think making an exporter for an app such as carrara than can read so many different formats is a much better solution than making exporters for X number of apps that can only read 1 or 2 formats.

Here is a list of import formats from carrara:

• A3D/A3P (Amapi)
• 3DMF (Apple’s QuickDraw 3D format)
• 3DS
• BVH
• COB
• DXF
• FBX
• LWO
• OBJ
• Poser® file formats: CR2/CRZ, PP2/PPZ, PZ3/PZZ
• RDS
• RZML
• SynthEyes
• IGES
• SAT
• STEP
• STL
• more...

You can use these file formats to export 3D objects:

• 3DMF (Apple’s QuickDraw 3D format)
• OBJ
• DXF
• 3DS
• VRML 2
• VET (Windows)
• Shockwave3D
• FBX
• Adobe After Effects

Hi xrok1...

As usual you could find some interested people around in Carrara Forums easier.
Because no Carrara Exporter Exists, not many Carrara people should be arround here...

If you are interested to use carrara only for exporting to Indigo purposes, you could try blender, that also supports lot of formats.... also the exporter(s) are developed very frequently!

when i go to the import list in blender I see only VRML, DXF, and STL.
not even OBJ?

besides i don't know Blender and i'm tired of chasing my tail learnig one new app after another, mostly because i'm trying to find something i can make a descent render in. Finally i found Indigo and have had some impressive results thanks to the fact that i have Sketchup exporter. problem is i model mostly in Solidworks due to the fact that my work needs to be buildable (Industrial designer). i also use Hex because i would like some organic stuff as well which i can't do in SW. So sketchup is great for initial work but geometry sucks and you can only see that when you render. Sketchup does not import many formats. DXF, 3DS, DEM.

so i'm saying support an app that supports many other apps and you'll kill the greatest number of birds with 1 stone.

P.S i see a Truespace exporter and I'm pretty sure there are more Carrara users out there. I'm going to post a link to Indigo at Carrara's official forum so you can see the increase in traffic on your site.

there are much more, in blender... where did you look at, to get only 3 formats??? That sounds strange

actually, you wouldn't need to learn whole blender.
Only the blendigo-python script or the standard blender exporter, where you have to setup materials in the blender internal material settings...

All the stuff can be reached by mouse-using, so you don't even have to learn all the Hotkeys, many Blenderers have problems with...

Blender supports:
VRML 1.0
DFX
STL
.3ds
.ac
.dae (1.3.1 and 1.4.0)
.off
.x
.dfx
.kml / .kmz (Google Earth)
.lwo
"Load MDD to Mesh RVK's"
.md2
.bvh
.ndo
.flt
.svg, .ps, .eps, .ai, GIMP (curves)
.slp
.radio
.raw
.ply
.cob
and .obj

these are the standard import possibilities, and out there, there are some more importers ;)

and export:
again
VRML 1.0
DFX
and STL

then
.3ds
.ac
.fbx
.xml / .igs (Indigo Exporter, the only thing, I added)
.dae (again 1.3.1 and 1.4)
Cal3D
Cal3D (.cfg, .xaf, .xsf, .xmf, .xrf) (no idea, why there are two times Cl3D)
.off
.x
.lwo
.mot
.md2
.ndo
.flt
.iv
.map
.radio
.raw
.r3d
"Save current theme" (nothing to do with 3D xD)
"Save Mesh as MDD"
.xsi
.ply
.cob
.wrl
.obj
.x3D
and finally .fig

this can also be extended by scripts, out there. ;)

Blender DOES import .obj it's in : File>Import>Wavefront(.obj)(the last option at the bottom)

Stick in Blender, learn it, and you will never change of app...

More Import/Export Scripts can be found here

There also Exists a specialized Indigo Exporter for Solidworks imported Projects to Blender here.

I don't want you to start learning Blender just the use of the exporter... nothing more ^^
But every Exporter to Indigo from even more 3D apps is a success for Indigo!
I hope some carrara guys could start an Exporter for Indigo...

**EDIT**
just a minute to late with my screenshoot

They should appear even though he hasn't Python installed.

I think they're just missing in his scripts directory.

@xrok1

Try opening Blender directory\.blender\scripts
and see if there's anything, or if you even have that folder.

If not, you have to reinstall. then, ther is something broken.
And get Python 2.5, to make shure, that EVERY script works^^

i downloaded blender-2.44-windows.zip it doesn't seem to contain a setup or install file so i just unzipped it to a folder called blender.

i tried again and checked the option to use folder names when unzipping and lo-and-behold now i have the full import list. thanks guys.

i'm curios why all the great mind that put these awsome open source progs together never include an installer or self extracting zip. they must think were all geniouses

anyways here i go again trying to learn a new app just so i can get an awsome render.

P.S any obvious pitfalls i should avoid when starting out?

Hmm.

Mind that all your normals are correct.

And try to get your objects in the right scale (1 blender unit = 1 meter).
That gives the best results. :)
